This traditional tea in many South American countries, increases your ability to think and concentrate. This is a non-addictive antidepressant, which contains less caffeine than tea, cocoa and coffee. It speeds up urine production and eliminates toxins that build up in the body.

Please note that Yerba Mate is not suitable for those with anxiety disorders, sleep problems or kidney failure. One of the studies showed that many patients who drank this had problems with the esophagus due to the temperature of the water and not the plant itself. There have also been cases where those who drink Yerba Mate on an empty stomach get stomach acid.

What types of Yerba Mate are there?

Although most people will think that the traditional drink is bitter and that the water should be boiling hot when the leaves are pulling, there are actually other ways to drink this:

  • Bitter: As we have already mentioned, this is the most common way to drink it in almost all of  Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. It is known as ” cimarrón”  or “feral”, as the horses that came with gauchos were the first to drink this mixture.
  • Cute: Those who are true to tradition claim that this is not real Yerba Mate. They add sugar, stevia or succulents to the brew. It is mainly women and children in Buenos Aires who drink it this way. This variant has a lot to do with immigration, as the Spaniards and Italians wanted to make their own mark on the area’s drink.
  • With milk: Instead of using water, use milk with sugar. The milk should be lukewarm.
  • With herbs: These are called ” yuyos” and are used in addition to, or infused with Yerba Mate, for a variety of flavors or for their medicinal properties. Among other things, chamomile, eucalyptus, mint, boldo or linden flower are used.

Instead of water, juice (either orange or grapefruit), herbs (preferably peppermint or lemon verbena) and sometimes lemon slices are used. The drink is prepared in a jug and poured over the leaves.
  • Boiled Mate: This is also a tea that comes in tea bags or in bulk. It is prepared like regular tea, but tastes like Yerba Mate. This is common in Argentina and Uruguay.
